Consultant directors on the rise

There’s a developing and relatively new breed of independent director emerging on the scene. This is someone who acts both as an outside advisor to the fund, in one capacity or another, but also has a position on the board as an independent director. These people are in effect consultant directors. The NED is finding out more about this as a result of launching its DirectorSearch facility.

Non-exec directors who also act as consultants to the funds, on whose boards they sit, have been around for some time. What is new is the expanding and different roles that they are taking in the management and oversight of these funds. In some cases they are more like senior part time employees than traditional independent directors.
